Establishing a Safety & Health Management System (SHMS)
Tuesday June 6th - 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
You no doubt have developed, adopted, and implemented various safety and health programs (e.g., LOTO, forklifts, hazard communication, etc.) for your workplace, but do you have an overarching Safety & Health Management System or SHMS? Now, you may be asking what, exactly is a SHMS, or you are wondering how a busy employer like yourself would go about putting on in place. The main goal of safety and health programs is to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths, as well as the suffering and financial hardship these events can cause for workers, their families, and employers. Safety & Health Management Systems focus on a proactive approach to managing workplace safety and health. Traditional approaches are often reactive–that is, problems are addressed only after a worker is injured or becomes sick, a new standard or regulation is published, or an outside inspection finds a problem that must be fixed. Safety & Health Management Systems, on the other hand, prioritize finding and fixing hazards before they cause injury or illness is a far more effective approach.
At their core, effective Safety & Healthy Management Systems have three basic elements: management leadership, worker participation, and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards to be effective. In this detail-packed webinar, you will hear from former OSHA officials who will discuss these core elements and a series of steps that you can start taking immediately after the program to make your workplace safer. Our speakers will also address best practices for creating and maintaining effective safety committees for those employers who may not be ready to adopt a comprehensive Safety & Health Management System.
Accountability for Safety: How to (and How Not to) Drive it Successfully
Tuesday June 13th - 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
“Safety is everyone’s responsibility” is a slogan that many companies have used for years, yet when we dig into who is responsible for what, how that expectation is communicated, how success is measured, and how we hold people accountable, these same companies are not putting their money where their mouth is.
Accountability for safety is no different than accountability for any other business metric, but the devil is always in the details. This discussion will include lessons learned and best practices in accountability successes and failures using Caterpillar’s six criteria of safety excellence.
In this interactive session, participants will learn what good accountability looks like and how to drive results ensuring EVERY employee is truly responsible for safety.
