General Mills-512x384
Belvidere’s school-based food pantry now has $5,000 in funding thanks to the General Mills Foundation,
which distributed the grant on behalf of the Belvidere Community Action Council.

The Community Cupboard serves Belvidere School District #100 students and families and its director saidthe grant came at a great time.

“With the holidays around the corner and students eating more meals at home, the timing of the grant is perfect,” Shannon Hanson said.

The pantry is housed in a classroom in the school district and is open every Thursday, including breaks and summer months, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.district100.com.

The more than 4,500 workers at Chrysler Group LLC’s Belvidere assembly plant turned out 30,578 vehicles in August, marking the first time production topped 30,000 since September 2007.

In September, workers completed another 28,478 Dodge Darts, Jeep Compasses and Jeep Patriots. Through three quarters, 244,317 compact sedans and SUVs have left Belvidere for dealers nationwide. That already surpasses the total vehicle production of 2009, 2010 and 2011. Workers are on pace to finish more than 300,000 vehicles in a year for the first time since 2007.

Chrysler, which is operating three shifts at the Belvidere plant, is the largest employer in Boone and Winnebago counties. The plant is one of the best success stories in the recovery from the Great Recession. As recently as June 2009, the plant was closed, the one shift of workers still active were laid off and not a single car was built as Chrysler reorganized in bankruptcy court.

Italian carmaker Fiat S.p.A took over the company during the bankruptcy.

The Great Recession officially ran from Dec. 2007 to June 2009.
